Luke’s attention to detail helps us to know that the new covenant community began with about 120 disciples of Jesus devoting themselves to prayer for 10 days. This passage commences with Peter quoting the scriptures, “….the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David…” Acts 1 v 16. Luke is pointing to the central place the written word of God played in the life of the early believers. This reference to the Holy Spirit also gives the reader a strong sense of continuity between the OT scriptures and the life of the early church. The remainder of this passage deals with the choice of Matthias based on his presence with the other disciples throughout the public ministry of Jesus. The method of his selection following the prayer,
“ Lord, who knowest the hearts of all men, show which one of these two thou hast chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside,..”
is quite different to that followed in Acts 13 v 1-3 when the Holy Spirit is present in his fullness. Luke tells us that Matthias was enrolled with the other 11 apostles.
