The apostle John knew the rich blessing of fellowship with God. He wrote to his friends to tell them how they too could live in fellowship with God and share in this joy. His message focussed on the fact that God is light, a pure uncorrupted light in which there is no darkness. If we are to live in fellowship with God we need to live in His light. This will inevitably lead us to see our sinfulness and our need to be cleansed from sin. John shares that if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. His faithfulness and justice to forgive and cleanse us from sin is guaranteed by the atoning sacrifice of Jesus. The blood of Jesus is able to cleanse us from all sin. In this state we can share fellowship with God.
